Overcoming Exhaustion

This is the second part of the discussion on feeling tired. Click here for Part 1

How to overcome low energy
If we simplify, Ayurveda uses 2 basic lines of treatment.

If there is tiredness due to lack of nourishment or physical, mental or sensory overwork, Brmhana advices are given to regain nutrition & strength.

Some examples include: increasing sleep, increasing easily digestible but heavier foods, stable quieting yoga, grounding meditation, and root herbs that lend earth qualities, and treatments with oil.

Most important here is reducing stress & worries, rest, and doing less.

If the tiredness is due to excess, showing up as indigestion, inertia, heavy feeling, ama, then langhana is advised to reduce tissue, stimilate hunger, and excite the body & mind should be followed.

Some examples include: not eating between meals, moderate fasting such as a kitchari monodiet, panchakarma, increasing movement, decreasing sleep, breaking up long stretches of sitting with movement, herbs that lend firey and airy qualities, improving digestion under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner, breathing practices like bhastrika & kapalabhati that excite the system, being out in the wind & harsh elements.

Most important here is finding an appropriate level of exercise & cleaning up & reducing food intake until you’re hungry for each meal, and reducing the heavy sticky undigested food with the help of an Ayurvedic practitioner.
